NFC UID Keyboard Readers: A Procurement Checklist

Choose a keyboard-emulation NFC reader for card-number input. Define UID format, target field, firmware tier and a repeatable workflow test before ordering.

A keyboard-emulation reader is a practical option when an application already accepts a card number in a text field. The purchase specification should describe the resulting input, not merely say “NFC reader”. A readable number is useful only if the application stores and interprets it consistently.

Decide whether identifier input is the whole task

For a reception form or attendance spreadsheet, the task may end after a reader enters the card UID. For reading protected data, writing tags or performing an application authentication exchange, it does not. Choose the software path according to the operation; use the PC/SC, SDK and keyboard comparison to separate these requirements.

The manufacturer describes JustID as a UID reader with HID keyboard and CDC ACM serial output. Lite supports ISO/IEC 14443 A/B UID; Standard adds ISO/IEC 15693 UID. Specify the tier with the card type. See the official JustID description.

Agree on the number format before importing records

Ask for an example from your existing system and record:

  • Hexadecimal or decimal output.
  • Byte order and required length.
  • Whether leading zeros must remain.
  • Any prefix, suffix or final Enter/Tab keystroke.
  • The receiving field and its validation rule.

NXP’s UID application note explains different UID lengths, random identifiers and non-unique identifier cases, and notes that there is no general recommendation for turning the bytes into an integer. A format decision belongs in the application specification. Reading a UID alone is not an application-level authentication procedure.

Test the whole input workflow

Use your real form or spreadsheet, not just an empty text editor. Check the selected field, characters received, validation, focus after submission and the behaviour when a card stays near the reader. Decide which repeated events the application should accept. Reconnect the device and repeat with every card type that will be used.

For unattended terminals, include a test after the browser or application loses focus and after the host restarts. A reader sending keystrokes does not manage your application’s focus; the application workflow must do that reliably.

Choose keyboard or serial output deliberately

Keyboard output fits an existing text field with minimal application changes. Serial output is a separate integration choice for software that consumes device messages. Ask which mode is enabled in the delivered configuration and which setup tool is required to change it. Do not assume that an OEM UART variant and a finished USB device have the same wiring.

What to send for a quotation

Include a sample UID and expected output, your card protocol, host OS, receiving application, connector, desired output mode and quantities. If the application needs more than UID input, describe the extra operation before choosing a device.

Request a project quotation. For a broader shortlist, read the USB NFC reader buying guide.

Questions to consider

Can a UID reader write tag memory?

A card-number keyboard workflow only outputs an identifier. For memory operations, evaluate a PC/SC or SDK read/write workflow and confirm the card commands.

Why can two readers display a different number for one card?

The representation may differ in hexadecimal or decimal format, byte order and leading zeros. Agree on one format and test it against your existing records.
